GOTD...

There is a site called Giveaway of the Day that, as the name implies, will let you download and install commercial software for free. The catch is that you only have a limited amount of time in which to download and install the programs, and they come with no support or upgrade path.

Aside from the EverNote application, which I've since pretty much abandoned, I've downloaded a small handful of applications from the GOTD site that, alas, have never fired my imagination.

But what I've found curious, lately, is that almost all of the recent offerings suffer from disproportionately large numbers (often exceeding 50%) of thumbs-down votes. (I think the most positive balance has been 2-to-1 in favor of thumbs-up.) It's hard to figure out what the reason might be for this kind of response, but I've accepted, as a working hypothesis, that whatever bias is reflected by such negativity is constant.

However it is the comments that I find particularly useful, since often someone will pipe up and say something like, "Hey! xxx already does this and does it better!"

My backup completed last night with no major hiccups (a number of browser cache files wouldn't copy, which is no big deal). On the other hand, somewhere along the line I must've removed my PNY 4-GB Attaché a little too quickly from a USB port, as chkdsk found and fixed enough file system problems to free up nearly an additional 2 GB of space.

Anyway, time to go do breakfast with Galina!

Cheers...
