I have to admit I've done the same thing a few times, but it turns out the major hazard along a straight stretch of road at night is not other cars (which have headlights) but animals like deer and elk (which do not and will total your car just as easily if you broadside them).

To really get the full effect of a clear night sky, you really have to stop the car and get out. It's really something!
