Basically, the word, term, etc. being defined or that is the subject of a definition.
I ran across this on the English side of a term in a Russian–English dictionary. Just as is the case with my all-time favorite word ('flibbertygibbet'), its use in contemporary English just won't work, because nobody (short of someone with the vocabulary of a William F. Buckley, Jr.) will have the foggiest idea of what it may mean.
