Educational day, for sure...
I was asleep by 1 am, after having taken only a half dozen long-exposure pictures. I had every intention of getting up at 3:15 or so to go out and catch some more of the Leonids, but the truth is that I barely remember turning over and shutting off the alarm. The fact I got up in time to do my morning ablutions, eat, and get dressed before going to the store has more to do with habit than alarm clocks.
I didn't spend much time in the store today, returning home around 10:30 am or so, whereupon I became acutely aware that LeechFTP (which I used to back up my home directory on onegin before installing RH9 over the RH7.2 that was on there) has a problem with files (and directories) of the dot-name type, such as .forward and .muttrc and others, which are all configuration files for mail.
I was able to recover some older copies from backups that did include such files and directories, as well as the .fetchmailrc file for root, and I managed to edit the postfix config files into shape, at which point I was out of time, since I had to do some translation work, too, which is due tomorrow during the day.
In the end, it turns out that - for some reason - some necessary files (such as resolv.conf) never got copied to the postfix subdirectory from which that MTA runs chrooted. (I get the feeling I'm writing a foreign language.)
So my mail seems to be working again, but my confidence level is not all that high, and there are still things left to do to restore my setup to the way it was 24 hours ago (e.g., spambayes filtering). I feel... as if I've been ridden hard and put away wet.
However, the good news is that I managed to review the translation for the new client, though I'll not be finished until I write the report, which at this juncture looks like it's going to be tomorrow. (I think I may call Drew in the morning and tell him I won't be coming into the store until later in the day; the report is due around noon.) Then again, as soon as the report is delivered, I'll have the remaining 20 pages of the Friday job to do.
's better than the alternative, though.
Cheers...
