There is no evidence that Lance Armstrong has ever used Virgin Cola

So reads a Google ad off to the side of my screen.

I suppose I should be a little excited about the Armstrong phenomenon since we do run an official USPS contract postal station at the store and Armstrong rides for the Postal Service team. Not to mention that Armstrong is on the verge of doing what nobody has done before: win the Tour de France six times.

I haven't really paid much attention to Armstrong or his story, since bicycling is not something I follow. I do know that he survived testicular cancer and is a very determined individual.

And while I can understand that people can get emotional about sports, I really get turned off when I see something like this:



I'm not at all sure about what drives people like the jerk waving both middle fingers almost in Armstrong's face. What's the deal? Is this guy is going to go back to the office tomorrow and brag about this magnificent athletic "achievement"? Will he dandle his grandchildren on his knee many years hence and extend, for the amazement of young eyes, arthritic fingers that once conveyed vulgarity to a world-class athlete?

There's reports people were spitting at Armstrong, too. Disgusting.

* * *In other news, after having finished a nice piece of translation work, I arranged for a doctor's appointment in Durango next week (hopefully, the black ink cartridge in my Epson will last that long). Apparently, a lifetime of exposure to the sun will require removal of a small chunk of my back, which is not something to be happy about, but when you consider the possible alternative... it's a small price to pay.

After closing the store this evening, I returned home to the paper chase and general junk cleanup. It's not a pretty sight, but my office is visibly cleaner right now than it was yesterday. I found myself shredding credit card statements from 1992 earlier this evening. Ye gods, am I a packrat!

My 'sainted' father kept enormous quantities of cancelled checks, bank statements, financial records ~ anything he thought could be needed to prove payment or ownership, etc. ~ and some of them dated back to 1940s, when we first moved from Illinois to Colorado. What a purge job that has been! But there have been a number of valuable 'provenance' items, early writings, journalings which turned up, all testament to his character and early training, sense of humor and attitude to life. Perhaps every person is meant to serve as his/her own Boswell??
