I probably would have been playing in our house in Lubbock, maybe in the backyard. My mother would have been home, and our two German Shepards. I should write Stanislav Petrov a letter of thanks. It's strange that I didn't know this story at all! My history focus has tended to be early to mid 20th century, despite my fascination with the Cold War and how terrified I was of the bomb when I was about ten.

Yes, supposedly.

But one likes to think that had he not smelled a rat with the satellite data, that someone in his chain command would have.

Then again, we're talking about the same chain of command that, six years earlier, was complicit in shooting down a civilian jet liner.
