With my sister-in-law in Colorado, I had some reservations about visiting my mother-in-law, who lives with my sister-in-law in a small apartment not far from the next-to-last stop on the yellow metro line. The reason for my hesitation lay with not wanting to put V.N. out on my account, which I knew she would do - despite the declining health one might expect on the eve of octagenarianism (if there is such a word).

In the end, I decided that blood is thicker than my concerns, and that, were our roles reversed, I'd want V.N. to drop by and visit me, so I hauled my stuff from the Courtyard down to the area of Red Square (not really far, but that 25-kg suitcase of mine is really a drag, even if it does have wheels!) and entered the Metro.

On the way, I passed a banner stretched across the street proclaiming a chess event (a tournament, I suspect) that was being held at GUM to honor the memory of one of my favorite players, Mikhail Tal. I toyed with the idea of returning later in the day to see what I could see, but decided against it. After all, I hadn't seen V.N. for a few years.

She looks good, though she speaks more slowly than before. We had lunch (where, predictably, she tried to stuff me with enough food to feed a small African village for a week) and then I napped, and later we had a light dinner and I took her shopping.

I'm glad I stopped by, as I'm sure she is, and I got an opportunity to rest up from recent travels.

I am at the Delta First Class Lounge at Sheremetevo, waiting for my flight to be called. There's a lot less stress to traveling when you upgrade, I think, since you get to go through the shorter lines. That way, you don't have to waste nervous energy worrying about, for example, the traffic jam in which I found myself this morning on the road to the airport.

I took a long-ish video with my Nikon this morning, as the driver negotiated the city to avoid an existing jam on the MKAD (ring road), but in the end, we arrived at the airport only a few minutes behind "schedule."

There's a line to use the machines here at the lounge, so I should probably cede my place. I really miss home and family, and look forward to returning.

Cheers...
