I woke up at around 4 am this morning, and instead of turning over and going back to sleep, I got up to see if I could see Venus rising in the eastern sky. The planet was shining brightly, so, I got dressed and ventured out onto the veranda to see if I could catch sight of comet C/2001 A2 (LINEAR), which is the year's most visible comet so far and which only became visible to folks in the Northern Hemisphere a few days ago.

Unfortunately, though Venus was visible, most of the sky above it and further to the east was overcast, so I could see nothing. Ah well... it was nice to walk out into the cool night air and hear almost-silence.

I started to clean out what the former owner of the house described as the "mud room" (the room you use to don and doff outdoor clothing as you leave or enter the house). I've had boxes of books piled in there since we moved in. The problem now is shelf space. I installed three 9-foot shelves yesterday in short order, but they're full now and I have an impressive pile of books left over in my office.

I am sure I shall think of something. In the meantime, Drew and I put a noticeable dent in putting the garage in order. Noticeable, but not significant. But heck, a little bit at a time...

Ming's curiosity regarding Huntur has not flagged. As we sat in Drew and Shannon's sitting room eating sandwiches, he positioned himself on the threshold and gazed steadily at the newcomer. Ming being a naturally loving dog, I am sure there is nothing hostile in his attentions.

A little more research on "Huntur" would like to convince me that it is a boy's name (fie upon that!), and there are several Japanese and Korean pages on the Web that come up in a Google search, all having something to do with monsters. Also a page, in Malaysian, that mentions a doctor having Huntur as a surname.

There's a large thunderstorm blowing in... gotta go.

Cheers...

Good Morning...

i'm usually up at that hour ... where do i look for "comet C/2001 A2 (LINEAR)"?

Our valley faces almost due west and because of the hills its hard to see anything low in the sky to the east or south ... would you point me in the correct direction with a sense of time that would be best?

You can view a graphic at the Space.com (http://www.space.com/) web site.

The general area is about 45 degrees east of venus and about 10 degrees higher in the sky.

I am not at all sure the comet will look much different from a star to the unaided eye.

Cheers...

Thanks Alex, i'll take a look.

Did find some infro from a few months ago and took the liberty to post them ... it looks pretty nice but i understand it (they?) may look like a star from this angle.

With a bow...
