Very much so rumor. The Russians have had a snootful of Afghanistan, enough to last for quite some time. As an added incentive to stay aloof, any involvement viewed as hostile will undoubtedly be reflected in an escalation of Islamic fundamentalist fervor in the Central Asian states that, for now, form a buffer between Russia and Afghanistan.
No. I can't really see it. In any event, what would need convincing is not one man, but all (or most) of his advisors.
Assuming that Afghanistan is really the object of our response, I feel we're going to have to figure out something better than a conventional military response. Afghanistan has been the "rock" upon which two world powers (USSR and Britain) have been severely bloodied; we don't need to be the third.
