Too much input today.

A "back translation" occurs when a document that has been translated from language A to language B is translated back into language A. This is done at some organizations to verify that the original document was properly translated. However, monolingual people with little exposure to foreign languages and translation are often surprised when back translations do not repeat the original document word-for-word, and this is apparently what my client assumed had happened when the end client told him that my translation and the original looked nothing like each other.

My translation had not started out to be a back translation, but owing to miscommunication, that's how it turned out. In retrospect, I am actually happy that occurred, because if I had been instructed to merely look at the Russian and incorporate changes back into the English, the job would've taken a lot longer than it did.

In any event, my comments made it to the end client today, and by late afternoon, it was apparent the end client had apparently come around to my view, i.e., that what the Russian side had sent back did not much resemble the English original.

The repair shop called this morning to note that the voltage across the starter was only 4 volts, and by the time all the dust had settled (and we had settled our bill), we were the proud owners of a new starter relay.

Hitomi took me to visit the Crow's Nest over in La Porte, where she knows the owners. It's a fairly interesting place very close to Galveston Bay that specializes in Native American jewelry and art.

Galina, Hitomi, and I ate dinner at the Italian Cafe just down the street. The food was okay—the company was the centerpiece of the evening—but I'll also not forget being able to bring in your own wine (there's a liquor store a few doors down and I picked up a bottle of Chianti while the ladies were ordering), albeit the house did charge a very modest corkage fee.

The Raspberry Pi would appear to be rather picky about what monitors it will talk to over its HDMI interface. As a data point, it would not talk to my ASUS monitor. I thought about using the Pi's composite video output, but then it occurred to me that I may not have a suitable cable (!). And then it occurred to me that since the design philosophy behind the Pi is to get it disseminated widely, perhaps I might have better luck trying to hook it up to our HDMI-equipped television downstairs, but it's too late to go trying that now.

Gotta get to sleep...
