I've pretty much gone though and disabled anything in Startup that looks superfluous. (Along with a few things that might actually be useful... I've developed this mood, see?)

I've made a list of what I've disabled (including one item with the sort of scary name "Program"), in case of strange behavior down the line.

This massacre was the result of learning that most of the online information about potential hazards associated with various files is not very helpful in determining what a particular file is used for, which would be really helpful in determining whether to disable loading it or not.

(Hey! The worst thing that can happen is that Windows stops working, and I'm pretty much already there when double-clicking on a file or app yields either no result or freezes the system.)

If performance returns to normal as a result (so far, so good), then I can start re-enabling programs I use all the time.

I just hope Emacs is not the culprit.

I still have one computer running windows 8. I only use it occasionally (its in a nook in the kitchen, and mostly for playing music while I cook or clear up). Every time I switch it on it takes 15 mins or longer to download and instal updates. Skydrive and dropbox sync in seconds on my macbook air. On the windows 8 pc it takes for ever. Its almost like it re-downloads every file, rather than just those with new versions.

Did I mention it sucks?
