Your first sentence brought to mind several humorous cartoons and whatnot on just how one might go about playing chess by mail!
Probably the most detail-oriented opponent I ever played not only wrote out the moves using notation (which is the official record of the move), but his cards had chessboards pre-printed on them, and he would apply little rubber stamps, colored red and black, depicting the pieces in their position!
