Service Module docks successfully!
Jul. 25th, 2000 10:21 pmWhereas I found myself in the ISS Flight Control Room for the SM launch earlier in the month, I observed the docking of the Service Module with the FGB this evening from the Russian Regional Control Group facility at the MCC.
The television picture was nothing to write home about; for the most part, the image on the screen looked like a patch of white smeared on a dark background. Then, for a few moments, the FGB came into focus. The image deteriorated, however, and the next time an image from space appeared on the monitors, the vehicles had executed a "capture" and were in the process of driving the hooks home.
The room burst out into smiles and applause when the capture was announced. Other groups gathered at separate locations within the MCC paused from what they were doing to follow the docking, and also rejoiced. Contact came a few minutes short of 8 pm, Central time.
So now, with this one under our collective belt, all attention turns to the next phase of building a station, followed by the next, and the next, and so on...
Cheers...
