I spent this glorious day doing absolutely nothing.

Well, not really.

On the way back from the airport yesterday, I decided to pop for one of the $79 refurbished 10-GB hard drives on sale at MicroCache, a local retailer that specializes in selling discounted hardware. Today, I spent a couple of hours upgrading the 2.1-GB drive on the machine I'm using as the Linux IP masquerader to use the 10-GB drive. I realize that the bump up from 2.1 to 10 is rather large, but that's what's happening in the hard disk business today. Apparently, it's not easy to find hard drives that store much less than 10 GB these days. Just as it's getting harder to find CPUs for the older motherboards.

I filled in the dead time while CDs rotated and hard drives shooshed by reading the rest of Clancy's The Bear and the Dragon. True to form, Clancy kept me turning pages down to the last one.

Everything went well with the Linux install (it finished long before I finished the Clancy book). I elected to do a "Custom" install and install all of the software that came with the Linux package. That hardly put any kind of dent in the storage available on the hard drive, apparently.

I got reaquainted with a utility called chkconfig, which help manage the scripts that are run at various runlevels. Specifically, I added a firewall script to the mix. The only problem is, although the firewall script I wrote installs the firewall rules like a champ, it does not install the modules necessary for the machine to do IP masquerading (even though the appropriate lines are in place in the script). I've got a band-aid fix in place for this problem, but I suppose ultimately, a thorough fix will require me to recompile the kernel, which was not really a viable option on the 2.1-GB drive. I just don't have the energy to recompile the kernel right now, either.

Lee is up in town hanging out with her friends. Last night, she was involved in some sort of on-line convocation associated with the MUD that she seems to be logged in to only about 20 hours a day. She was still at it when I went to sleep and the note she left said she'd be back today, but a couple of hours or so ago she called to let me know to expect her around 10:30 pm.

Right.

Cheers...
