Autumn sneaked in while I was not looking (actually, while I was in Orlando). Normally, that really doesn't mean anything around these parts, but the temperatures around here (we're halfway between Houston and Galveston) have been really high lately - in the 90s, 100s, and even above 110 F a couple of times - so that the onset of a cold front a day or so ago has everyone hoping that summer is more or less over. As I write this, my outdoor thermometer reads 57.9 F. With temperatures like these, it's almost a joy to walk around outside.

I spent a bunch of time at work today in the trenches, editing mostly. I also sent out the Technology Control Plan in the morning, responded to two corrective actions, and interviewed an earnest young man who is applying to be the company's IT manager. The major difficulty thus far in trying to fill this position is the overabundance of overqualified candidates whose primary reason for wanting the job is a convenient commute. Since when has "a convenient commute" been something one brings up in an interview? Makes me wonder, sometimes, if I haven't picked the wrong profession.

I caught a news item earlier today about what may be the next wrinkle in reality television. The folks who put together the wildly successful Survivor! series seem to have reached a meeting of the minds with Mircorp (a Dutch corporation, if memory serves, that's trying to keep the Mir space station alive), and they are supposedly planning to open up web-based registration soon for people to apply for a chance to become one of some number of contestants who will compete at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City for the right to fly on a Soyuz to the Mir space station. The idea is a little crazy, I suppose, but on the other hand, if it manages to whip up the same kind of interest on the part of the (largely somnambulant) public in space exploration, maybe it's not such a bad thing?

Segue.

A look at the comma-delimited format of downloaded LiveJournal posts suggests that the file containing the download can easily be imported into a MySQL database. I confirmed this by creating a suitable table in a suitable database and sucking in the data from the download file. Unfortunately, at this point, that pretty much exhausts my skill at using SQL to make data dance. I figure my next step will probably consist in examining how I can write a PHP script to submit a search string that would be used to extract data from the MySQL database and allow users to jump to posts containing the search string.

But I have bigger fish to fry in the meantime.

Cheers...
