The day started early as I left the house at 6:15 am to get to JSC on time for my imagery telecon. As far as notification was concerned, I apparently experienced a "miscommunication" with the telecon coordinator, who faxed the assignment information to a machine near where I sit doing the Execute Package.

That's that last place I would think to look. When I hear "I'll fax it to you," I think about getting it at my fax number.

There were no background materials attached, for what it's worth. That's perhaps one of the most frustrating aspects of showing up to interpret for a telephone conversation, since most of the time the participants do go to the trouble of informing each other in advance of what they plan to discuss. Not providing the interpreter with these materials is criminally negligent, in my (arrogant) opinion.

(That reminds me of the time I was interpreting for a safety commission, and this one wonk gets up to do his presentation and starts by distributing handouts to all of the participants, including the Russian I am interpreting for, but decides I am beneath notice and skips me. The Russian, seeing me skipped, got up and brought his copy of the handout to me and then returned to his seat.)

Some people would not recognize a clue if they were hit by one on the interstate going 70 mph.

As it turned out, the meeting agenda was 5 pages long, printed on both sides of the page. You could handily swat flies with it. I got to see it after the connection was made to Moscow.

Grr.

And there are probably people who were at the telecon who left thinking I was rather poorly prepared for the event, no doubt.

Scroom.

I left work a few minutes after quitting time, to take care of some last-minute radiograms for the Ops Planners. I got home to meet Lee at the house. We made dinner, consisting of turkey and sausage with sauerkraut, and sat down to watch Gladiator.

Lee'd seen it before, but it was my first time, and I liked the film. Maybe I'm thick, but I could detect none of the undertones that Feht assured me were in the film.

Here's to being thick.

Cheers...
