I really, really should have known better than to think I was going to get much work done yesterday after closing the shop. Even closing an hour early, by the time I managed to get home, warm up some leftovers and get down to work... the kids came home with their new arrival.

Moreover, some of their friends from around here stopped by, too.

Needless to say, I didn't get a whole lot of work done, so I decided to call it an early night and went to sleep around 11, setting the alarm for 4 am.

Even after 5 hours of sleep, the work is going slowly. Now, just after 7:30 am, I still have probably 10 hours of work left to do. I brewed a fresh pot of coffee just now... maybe the caffeine will perk me up.

Drew is going to go open the store in a few minutes, but I'll be relieving him at 10:30 or so, and then he'll be back around 4:00 and I'll go back to translating.

I spoke to Galina yesterday, and she'll be emptying the storage space today. Yesterday, she got a plumber to come out and fix the broken pipe and clean out the sewer line. She'll probably be back some time late next week.

I got an e-mail offering a couple of weeks of work in Houston. Simulations, mostly, I am told. I need to respond today. Normally, I'd say yes automatically, but Shannon's parents will be coming out here in that time frame, and I'd like to be here.

Decisions...decisions.

Cheers...

When my Sony VAIO simply froze for no reason while doing the translation that was due this morning, I was pretty upset. Even more so when the machine would not restart. Not only did I lose about 20 minutes of work or so, but if the machine did not come back to life, I would lose the results of three nights' really hard work.

It turns out the unit was almost too hot to touch. The fan was not working. I don't think it stopped because of the incident of a few days ago, I think it stopped because of all the glop in the air around here and in Houston.

As this post demonstrates, after the Sony cooled down, it started up. But it's getting hot again; I'll have to shut down again soon. The file will not stay open on my desktop, either because it really likes the Word 2000 on my laptop, or because it really hates the Word 97 on my desktop.

I have about three hours of work left, and that doesn't count any additional time for reviewing my work.

Gonna be (another) long night, except tonight, I'll be shutting my machine off from time to time... unless I can come up with a way to induce air flow through the thing.

On the positive side, I was allowed to hold the baby today. Amazing how many facial expressions a baby can make while it's sleeping. (And I wasn't even trying to sing!)

Cheers...
