It was a fairly slow day at the store. I called Galina around 9 am. She wasn't home, so I tried her on my cell. It turns out she's on the road, and I think she said she was passing through Conroe, on the northern limb of the Houston area. Therefore, I conclude, I can expect her home either very late tonight or tomorrow.

I am currently cooking cock-a-leekie soup, a traditional Burns' Day dish. I've never had it, but when I saw how simple the recipe is, I decided to risk it. The first phase is to simmer chicken together with diced bacon and prune pits (go figure, Drew says they add flavor), and that phase is under way. The next phase consists of deboning the chicken and then simmering the stock and meat together with leek and tarragon for about 20 minutes. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it, tho...

Yesterday, before turning in, I lay in bed and watched part of Silence of the Lambs, and had forgotten just how riveting a performance Anthony Hopkins gives in that movie (and Jodie Foster is no slouch, either). Unfortunately, sleep overtook me before long, and as I always like to face the new day with at least 3-4 hours of shuteye in the inventory, I turned off the tube and went to sleep. One strange thing I noticed was that the movie was showing on A&E.

The optometrist's office called today to tell me my reading glasses were in. It turned out the doctor was in, so I hied myself over there and he took a look at my left contact lens. In the process, he junked the lens and gave me a new one, on the basis of my trying a technique called "monovision," which is where my right eye is corrected for distance, while we leave my left eye alone, as it works at 20/30 for distance and is fine for close-in work. The replacement he gave me, he says, would be useful particularly for night driving. I don't know about the reading glasses, though...

Thee are no more sessions at the store between now and when the translation is due, which I peg at 6 pm my time tomorrow. I have 15 pages left to do, followed by what is sure to be a trying review-and-resolution session. I do hereby resolve that once it is gone, I shall refuse to take any additional work until after I arrive in Houston. I still do not know what I'll be doing down there, by the way. In the interim I must finalize some paperwork for the store.

Reminder to self: Self, Drew is due at the Durango airport tomorrow to pick up Shannon and Huntur.

Cheers...
