Galina and I took off from the store a few minutes in front of noon and went to a gathering of folks who assemble to play Robert Kiyosaki's "CashFlow" game. We've been reading Kiyosaki's books for some time, and as is the case with most books that point you in the right direction, the advice seems easy enough to understand, but very hard to put into practice.

The point of the game is to get out of the "rat race," which is a small circle near the center of the board. One does this by making investments that put money in your pocket, which Kiyosaki defines as true "assets." (Under that definition, a home that you own would not qualify as an asset, as it does not put money in your pocket.)

Once your passive income exceeds your monthly expenses, your status changes: you have gotten out of the rat race, and can now pursue your dream, or accumulate further wealth.

It turned out there were 9 people at the gathering, so random teams were picked, and I drew Sandy T., who sells health insurance here in town and is one of the store's customers; Galina partnered with a woman who I've met once or twice, but don't know very well.

Sandy and I were pretty lucky, I guess. In any event we "won" both games in fairly short order. (I attribute this to beginner's luck on my part.)

There are certain aspects of the game that mimic real life, and there are the kinds of things one remembers from playing Monopoly as a kid: squares that force you to part with half (or all) your money, opportunities to draw from a pile of cards that generally bring bad news. No jail, though.

The one thing I did bring away with me is a desire to go through the Kiyosaki materials again. Our hosts, who seem pretty on-the-ball, suggest - if their experience is any guide - that several readings are necessary to really understand what's going on.

In any event, Galina and I seem to be on a roll, socially. First there was the casino night there, a couple of weeks ago, and now this...

It's been a long day. I got up at 4 am this morning to see if the sky was clear. There's a comet in the sky, named after the two amateurs who discovered it - Ikeya-Zhang - or at least who discovered it this time around. (The last time this particular comet passed this close to the sun was sometime in the early 1600s.) In any event, the comet is said to be a naked-eye object, located somewhere to the "right" and somewhat "below" the W of Cassiopaeia, at least for now. By the 16th of April, it will be to the right and a little above the W.

Daylight Savings Time goes into effect tonight, so I might try the same trick tomorrow, except at the early hour of 5 am.

Now I'm off to quickly check the official time, as I notice about a 15 minute discrepancy between my computer's time and my alarm clock (and I'm betting my alarm is right).

Cheers...
