How do I hit 'Pause'?
May. 11th, 2002 07:55 pmMan, has this day gone by quickly! Lee and Dwayne left earlier this afternoon to take in a Little League game where Dwayne's little brother, Travis, is playing.
Me, I did the laundry (long overdue, in fact) and some food shopping, sent off a rebate, and almost washed the car (slowed down to make the turn, but didn't as there was a line of cars waiting... it's the thought that counts, no?).
Then, while waiting for the laundry to dry (the house is currently sans washer), I watched Beat the Devil, a 1953 film by John Huston starring Humphrey Bogart and Gina Lollabrigida. While I can understand why the film is not one of the great films of all time, it has a certain 'snap' to its pace that makes it enjoyable to watch. Truman Capote is noted as the lead writer of the screenplay (Huston is credited as second fiddle).
* * * Last night, Lee, Dwayne and I watched Ronny Yu's The Bride with White Hair, and it seemed a completely comprehensible film - which might best fit in the "swords and sorcery" category - up until the last ten minutes or so, when all hell broke loose on the screen. My lack of comprehension might be the result of having missed something during the film, or it may be a cultural thing with the meaning embedded in the symbolism, but I'm not willing to invest another 92 minutes to watch the film again and (maybe not) find out what I missed.
It's interesting to note what "erotic" means to different cultures, BTW. Mulholland Drive was billed as "erotic" in its carton words, and featured topless lesbian scenes. The extent of "EROTIC!" (so says the carton prominently) in The Bride with White Hair runs along the lines of two adults running their hands over each others' bodies while standing under a stream of water (deemed "cheesy" by Lee). Diff'rent strokes, for sure.
* * * Lee and Dwayne's friend Justin was here yesterday when I returned from work. Lee announced that everyone was going to engage in a kind of Linux marathon to get her machine up and running and add capacity to the house's local network. Cool. The kids have DSL service, and I don't know if it's the proximity to the local telephone harware (literally across the street), but they routinely are able to shove 160 KB/sec through the piping.
I'm not at all sure they got much accomplished (the copy of "Redmond Linux" that came with my copy of Linux format is still on Lee's machine as I write this), but I'll have to wait for them to get back before I can get any kind of update.
* * * At any rate, at one point, Justin's sitting at Dwayne's computer and talking to Lee and Dwayne. As he's explaining something to them, he's got his head aimed at the screen of Dwayne's computer and he's scrolling the display, and by golly, I realize he's looking at a LiveJournal display!
Two thoughts flash through my mind. I immediately wonder, gee isn't that curious (running across an LJer in RL completely at random), followed by, gee isn't that curious (being able to make out a scrolling LJ screen from about 12 feet away without my contacts :^).
It turns out Justin is an LJer (
lazserus), which explains some positively strange e-mail that I received at the account I maintain to receive my LJ messages.
It be a small world, no?
Cheers...
