I got up at 5:30 am yesterday morning, getting up without much difficulty, knowing I had to do quite a bit of cleaning before leaving. The cleaning got done, I finished packing, and I made (and tested) a couple of last-minute tweaks to onegin's configuration before calling to say I was ready to be picked up.

John was kind enough to drive me to the airport, during which time he shared with me his list of grievances about his new house. I can tell that the builder, and probably the inspector, are going to have a time on their hands once John gets to them soon.

It started snowing on the way to Durango, with the snow getting thicker as we drove. It had lightened up a bit by the time we got to the airport, but I wasn't at all confident the plane would be on time as I got out of John's pick-up. Amazingly enough, I wasn't selected for any "extra" screening (no complaints, there) while going through security.

My concerns about the flight were justified. A few minutes after going through security, a young male voice came on the overhead to tell us that the inbound plane had been diverted to Farmington, and that it was now expected to arrive, in effect, about 15 minutes after we were supposed to leave. No biggie, as turnaround time is short and I had two hours to kill between flights in Phoenix.

In the end, the plane landed in Phoenix about 30 minutes before my Houston flight took off, and we actually deplaned only 12 minutes before that time. I walked briskly to the departure gate, only to find that the Houston flight was delayed as well. A 100-mph tail wind during that flight helped make up some time, and in the end, we arrived only a half hour late.

I went through the new car rental system at IAH for the first time on the inbound end. The bus system (one bus for all companies) works well, but there was only one agent at the Thrifty counter, and the customer at the head of the line was making a scene, trying to get the agent to give him a free upgrade. The only other glitch was being told to pick up my car in parking space 46, only to be directed to a space with no car in it. Apparently, either the instructions were wrong (although the signage was correct) or I didn't understand them properly.

Eventually I got to Pearland and had a pretty nice reunion with Galina and Natalie. The house looks nice, and several boxes are ready to go back to Colorado with Galina.

We plan to go to the Museum of Fine Arts today; they've got an exhibition from the Museum of Modern Art in New York that's supposed to be a knockout retrospective of the best art of the 20th century.

It's late, so I'll have to do my planned in-depth description of Galina's and my visit to the Museum of Fine Arts later. In short, we had a very good time, despite the crowds, even if - in my case - it meant reaffirming my distaste for some aspects of art in "the heroic century."

Lily, Natalie's cat, has taken the liberty of tearing huge, jagged holes in the aluminum foil that was covering the windows of "my" room down here, so I guess it"s a good thing I'm not working the night shift this trip.

As an additional note from yesterday, both Galina and Natalie noticed that I'd lost weight, so I must be doing something right.

Cheers...
