A long day...
Dec. 24th, 2003 06:10 pmOur employee Anna called to say one of her children was sick and that she would not be coming in. Combined with Galina's trip to Durango to try to do some Christmas shopping, this left us "boys" (me and Drew) in charge of the store.
It was well and truly one of those very slow days where most of the effort went into answering phones, it seemed. We found out late in the day that UPS would be by only to pick up Next Day and 2nd Day packages (i.e., not Ground), and that FedEx would be by late to make their pickup. That, combined with having told a lot of folks that we'd be open until 5 pm scuttled plans to go home even earlier.
The Honda sports an excellent sound system with a CD changer and tape player. It's the ideal setup for listening to self-help and language tapes, except for the fact that I live less than two miles from the shop. No matter, I'm sure I'll figure out a way to make use of the equipment (even without Drew's offer to "help out" :^).
Galina and I are mulling over the prospect of driving about 30 miles toward the middle of nowhere for a Christmas Eve party. The hosts are one of our occasional clients, and do not strike me as the type of people who'd celebrate in any halfway manner. He is, if memory serves, a country singer (albeit not one I am familiar with, which narrows the list down by maybe two people). She is an enterprising young woman who put together what seems to have been a successful "Boot Camp for Goddesses" session this past year which is still generating revenue. We'll see. It'd probably be good for us to get out, at any rate.
It's either the party or a viewing of Seabiscuit, which I rented.
* * * I am beginning to have a bad feeling about my recent eBay purchase of Michel Thomas CDs. I've sent three e-mails on three successive days, with no reply. The person no longer has anything on sale with eBay, and seems to have bought and sold items to himself under at least two names, leaving glowing "feedback."
In the final analysis, however, this is the holiday season, so maybe I ought to cut the seller some slack. I know I've been in situations when replying to eBay mail has not been a high priority. (That's why I'm only beginning to have a bad feeling about this...)
* * * On my way to buy coffee this morning, my eyes snapped as I spied a "leg lamp" in the window of the jewelry store two doors down from us. Those who have seen Jean Shepherd's A Christmas Story will know what I mean; those who haven't won't understand any description I offer.
I felt like popping in and yelling "Flick lives!" but it was too early in the day.
* * * May all who read these words (and everyone else, too, for that matter) have a wonderful holiday and holiday season!
Cheers...
