All "ringed" out, so to speak...
Jan. 4th, 2004 11:49 pmNatalie and I went to see The Return of the King today. We even managed to catch a matinee showing, which was nice.
I'm not sorry I saw the film, but to be frank, it did little more than provide closure for me. I'd been avoiding reading what other people had to say about this third film, so as to avoid any inadvertent spoilers (as I'd never read the books, which I assumed were Canon as far as these films were concerned). Now I am freed of that worry, and can roam the 'net at will, and maybe even check out some sites that take joy in pointing out errors of logic and continuity in films, and see what they have to say about this particular flick (though to be frank, it's not as if I search out such Web sites, as I'm not terribly interested in such errors).
Not to sound like a grouch, but it seems that various themes tend to get hit rather hard in these films. The first film is a dim memory right now, but I recall folks running over, under, around, and through high alpine meadows without end in the second film. There was none of that in this film, thank heaven, but I swear there was an equally thick layer of emotionally laden looks exchanged between various pairs of characters; at any moment I was expecting one or the other of any given pair to burst out crying or go for the ol' lip-lock (either one would have been suitable... I just hated the long, pregnant sequences of sad-sack mugs looking wistfully at one another).
All in all, though, I am not at all unhappy with the film. I'm glad I saw it, and that I saw it with Natalie, who was still a little misty-eyed at the end, despite this being her third viewing.
Time to go to sleep. Another exciting day of space-to-ground tomorrow.
Cheers...
