I decided last night that if I felt up to it, I would drive to Durango today, and then on to Farmington, New Mexico to visit the Sam's Club there. This would not only address the dearth of drinks in the store's cooler, but serve as a warm-up for any long-distance driving I may do this coming week to Texas. The morning came; I rose, decided the risk was minimal, and took off.

After setting off, I veered from the plan almost immediately, turning left onto highway 151 at Chimney Rock, heading for Arboles and Ignacio, eventually to intersect with highway 550 as it leads south toward New Mexico. The terrain looks pretty much the same along this route as it does along 160, though one does not really save any time or distance by taking it.

Having crossed the border into the Land of Enchantment, one inevitably enters the thriving metropolis of Aztec, which greets those arriving with the following:

Aztec, NM greets the world
Eventually, you arrive in Farmington.

I was feeling more tired than I should have when I got to the Sam's, but not in any danger. I made my purchases, stopped by an auto place for some parts for the Civic, and hoped to rest for a while inside an Outback steakhouse, but it seemed that neither the Outback nor the neighboring Chili's opened before 3 pm, so I headed on home, crunching an apple.

I took the "normal" route home, past the Ignacio turnoff, "cutting the corner" as I got to Durango. I returned home around 4:30 pm, and by about 5 had made peace with the fact that I really, really needed a short nap. The key word there is "short," as my three-hour siesta yesterday around noon I think contributed to my sleepless state at nearly 1 am this morning.

In the end, today's adventure demonstrated that I'm still not at 100%, but also that I'm not terribly far away, either. I shall take the opportunity of tomorrow's being a Federal holiday, and take one more day easy, and then it'll be back to the grind, taking care of various issues before taking off for Texas. At the top of that list is figuring out just about when my services will be needed for the March campaign.

Cheers...
