Rain, rain, go away...
Jun. 22nd, 2004 12:56 pmAlex wants to walk around downtown Moscow today!
Yesterday's diversion took me to the area of the Выставка достижения народного хозяйства (Exhibition of National Economic Achievments), or ВДНХ, as it is commonly known. I was there last year in the post-campaign days, and I recall from a recent web surfing session that it is the vicinity of the new location of the ABBYY software folks.
Unfortunately, while the new office is in the area, my memory was unable to pinpoint the location based on the map of the area I saw on their website. Nonetheless, I had a pleasant excursion and got a lot of exercise.
Buying legal software in this burg (and, I suspect, this country) is no easy matter, although pirated stuff is almost obscenely easy to buy... a CD filled with goodies such as the Russian version of Office 2003 will run 80 rubles, or less than US$2).
I also saw DVDs with Troy, Van Helsing, The Day After Tomorrow, and Kill Bill 2. It is curious to note that not all of the packages are identical in appearance. There are at least two variants of Big Fish and at least three that I've seen for Kill Bill 2. The quality of the media varies, too. Some copies just look like they'll fall apart in a couple of weeks.
Anyway, today I've decided to go to go downtown, mostly to refill my sagging expenses (I've got the Aerflot fee yet to pay, along with a taxi ride to the airport). I notice that Okhotniy Ryad appears to be closed (or let me put it another way: if they are, in fact, open, it is not obvious how one gets in). I'm posting this from the NetCity internet cafe, and to tell the truth, the heat inside here is unbearable, so I'm going to cut this post short.
Cheers...
