Earlier in the day, I went to a popular web-based translation site and entered the sentence:
I want to throw a party at the hotel.
The result was, um, interesting:
Je veux lancer un parti sur l'hôtel.
Leaving aside the fact that I cannot conceive of "le parti" as a suitable word for "party" (and the Larousse on my VAIO seems to agree), the rest of the translated sentence appears to say that I would like to physically throw it on the hotel! Merveilleux! (And thanks to LJ friend [livejournal.com profile] brenk for helping me out!)

Earlier in the day, I was assigned the task of supporting a safety briefing on the use of an escape chute that's attached to the tilting stand (a structure that will eventually hold the assembled upper stage and satellite, the so-called "space head unit"). The chute consists of three concentrically arranged sleeves that hang down from an frame that's about 35 meters up in the air, a distance that's too far to jump in case you want to get off the stand in a hurry.

After getting in the chute, one uses one's elbows and knees to control one's descent, and after the Russian instructor was through talking, some of the French team members who will be working on the satellite while it's on the stand climbed the stairs to try it out. I kept off to the side, myself. It was a good thing, too, as I later found out that folks in my position are forbidden to go down this device, for safety reasons.

As you've probably gathered by now, the support was a French-Russian interpretation job, with asides in English to keep the technical watchdog happy. I was initially worried that my French wasn't up to the job, but the French lead assured me that my French was good enough, so I did the best job I could, punctuated with only two requests for help. (And if one keeps in mind that nobody laughed, I conclude that my performance was okay).

A little over an hour left in the shift. I tried calling Galina a few minutes ago and succeeded (there are a limited number of lines going back to the States, and I invariably call when they're all busy). It was good to hear her voice.

Cheers...
