The spacecraft doesn't arrive until Thursday, so today was a rather light day. Vladimir and I got off at 1 pm, and I made the mistake of lying down after lunch and sleeping for nearly 4 hours. In my defense, I didn't get a good night's sleep last night, waking at 4 am this morning for the third and final time during the night.

The outside temperature had dropped to something like 65°F, so I started the day with a two-circuit walk around our loop. Since then, I've put new batteries in the pedometer I had the presence of mind to pack for the trip; I just have to remember not to wear my radio on the same side as the pedometer, since the jiggling of the radio as I walk tends to add extra phantom steps to my overall count.

I didn't get a chance to take many pictures while on the road, but of the ones I did take, perhaps the most curious was the following shot, of a girl about 16 years of age doubtless departing for vacation. I first became aware of this intrepid traveler as I looked down and spied her rather gaily colored booties (her feet must have been sweltering). As I considered taking her picture, she turned and I got a good look at her rucksack, which decided the issue of whether to unlimber my camera or not:

Going On Vacation

As I mentioned in a previous post, the Munich airport had an open, airy feel (especially when juxtaposed with my memory of Dulles). While stopping to restore the appropriate caffeine level in my bloodstream, I took the following shot. As an aside, I note that the prices are eminently reasonably, by American standards, for airport fare:

Coffee Bar, Munich

Finally, after dinner at the Polyot last night, I walked home by way of the Kometa (i.e., the long way). I happened to have my camera with me as I passed a structure that I had noticed several times previously, as the van I was in was driving past. I stopped and took the following shot, of a kind of flower that grows on tall stalks and which easily migrates away from cultivated areas into various corners of the landscape. This particular flower was standing by itself, just off the walkway:

Flower, Area 95

The person in charge of network issues was kind enough to arrange for me to have a login and password that I can, in theory, use with my laptop from my room. When I tried to connect yesterday, the phone number I had been given appeared to not work. When I tried the same number from the office today, the call went through, and I simply assumed (that word again) that it had been "activated" in the interim between last night and today.

Alas, when I tried to call from my room a few minutes ago, the number again didn't work. Nor, as it turned out, was I successful in dialing any other number from my phone. (Did I mention I was moved from my room on the second floor to a room on the third floor? I was.) Hopefully, I can get this taken care of tomorrow, as nobody seems to be answering the phone at Telecom right now. The issue isn't critical now - indeed it has never been critical in the past - but once this place fills up (the bulk of the launch team will arrive on Thursday, too), this downstairs office will become crowded again, and I've always felt rushed when using these computers.

Cheers...
