Alas, not very close to home. Northern Boulevard (aka Route 25A) is about two good stone heaves away.

The good news is that my neighbor here informed me that connection here is free, though TPTB are thinking seriously of starting to charge for it. I have come here because a client called offering work with a source file that weighs in at 56 MB, which would take me just under 8 hours to download from my folks' place, assuming I could monopolize the phone line that long.

That's one of the many things that confuzzles me about New York. In Houston, you've got places offering Internet connectivity on 16-inch centers (a couple of tapioca teahouses come to mind as examples). Here, after looking in the Yellow Pages, I am confused.

There is no section for "Internet Cafes" and pretty much all of the entries under "Internet Svcs" are for people who, undoubtedly, would be happy to bring DSL out to the house. I did call three places that looked as if they might offer services to the public, but two of the numbers are no longer in service, and the third rang on for nearly a minute before I hung up. (Maybe that's a hint as to why there are no places offering public Internet access, I don't know.)

I managed to download FileZilla at a normal speed (~65+ KB/s), but the ftp connection to my client appears limited to ~18 KB/s, so it's taking a good, long time to get the source file (the job is 70% complete as I type these words). Despite the fact that the deadline is Friday, I'm going to have to make a hard charge to finish as much of it as I can it tomorow, as the client wants a daily snapshot to allow the editor a chance to look at what I've done. Frankly, I do not want to spend a lot of time or gasoline this week waiting for bandwidth to do its thing.

I tried working out on the rowing machine my dad has gathering dust in the basement. I went about it in a naive manner, strapping my feet into the thing and then flexing my legs and arms in a natural manner, but could only exercise for about 5 minutes or so, as I was using muscles that don't get much use (I assume that you not only exert force "outward" as you extend your legs, but that you exert force the other way as you scrunch up again). In any event, I fully expect to feel secondary results of the workout (i.e., overall muscle pain) by tomorrow morning.

There are less than 10 minutes left to the download. Once I verify the integrity of the file and let my client know that I have it, I'm going to get out of here.

Cheers...
