E-mail blues...
Nov. 11th, 2005 02:33 pmApparently, the disk on the server my e-mail resides on at my provider (fastmail.fm) went kerflooey, and current estimates to restore all data to a newly formatted disk and then add the stuff that's gathering in the queue is 48 hours. The site's status page is saying they're going to try to restore the "small" accounts first, so as to get 75% of people back on line by about 8 pm tonight.
I don't know where, in the scheme of things, my roughly 800 MB of stored mail fits - I paid for one of their 2-GB-of-storage accounts way before Gmail made its appearance (and these guys, at least, promise not to analyze my mail for me, or keep copies after I delete it). Fortunately, I was able to put "Plan B" into effect and let a client who had called me know where to send an assignment.
There's lots of flakiness going on in the computer world, it seems. After closing the store last night, I went home, ate some salad, and played a little online poker. It was the first time I had experienced lag (at least, I think it was lag) while doing so, a phenomenon that blossomed into getting disconnected for some people at the table (including moi, who was disconnected several times during an el-cheapo tournament). Unlike previous tournaments, I didn't finish among the first 26 places, where 26th place wins something like $1.50, but I did finish 66th out of about 200, or barely in the top third. Part of the reason for such a finish has to be ascribed to my as-yet unsure skill, and also to the luck of the deal, but I can't help but think that the lag, which distracted me, was a significant factor.
The same client who called this morning just called again with more work. I need to jump on it, as tomorrow will be my last opportunity before leaving for Albuquerque to clean up around here and get ready for the trip. Galina told me this morning that she's getting ready to come home.
UPDATE! Even more work on the horizon, as yet another client calls (thank goodness for that). I'm going to be pretty pressed for time tonight and tomorrow, methinks!
Cheers...
