If yesterday the water supply seemed to vary with the time of day, making me think it was some kind of neighborhood usage problem, today there was absolutely no water coming out of our taps. I came back from helping to open the store, grabbed my camera, and went to photograph the water meter. The cover not only was frozen in place, but the water tech who came out yesterday had actually turned the catch (which requires a pentagonal wrench to turn) so that the cover could not be easily removed.

I eventually got the cover off and photographed the meter and noticed that no water was flowing through it. I waited a few minutes and the dial indicating gallon flow (the needle of which goes around once every 10 gallons) hadn't moved. I returned about 40 minutes later and it still hadn't moved, but not because I hadn't tried to coax some water from the taps in the house.

So, I called the water company and they sent another tech out pronto, and he verified that water was flowing on the utility's side of the meter, which meant... that there was a length of pipe between the meter and the house that was blocked with ice.

All of this starts to add up to an expensive proposition if plumbers get involved. I'm off to continue my struggle.

Cheers...
