The weather wasn't much to shout about, but then again, it wasn't miserable. The sky was well and truly overcast this morning, which probably justifies my lack of desire to get up at oh-dark-thirty to see if I could see the stars.
I spent most of the day in the store, and nothing surprising happened. A little in front of store closing, Galina came to spell me and I went to the rec center for a swim and a shower. In conversations with Feht, we had disagreed as to what constitutes a "lap" in a pool: I maintained it was one length of the pool; he maintained it was two lengths, i.e., from one end, to the other, and back to the starting point.
I have thus far confined my search to dictionaries, which all agree on "one circuit" being a lap (oh, how I remember those extra laps from track!), but most are silent when it comes to swimming pools. However, the topic page at Answers.com, which puts up a small banner for the American Heritage dictionary, does appear to support my view: 2. a. One complete round or circuit, especially of a racetrack; 2. One complete length of a straight course, as of a swimming pool.
This is, of course, not an issue of global consequence, but it does pique my curiosity.
In any event, during today's swim, I completed 12 laps of the pool, which is still way behind Feht's normal 30 lap jaunt, but still my recent personal best. Ah, progress!
Speaking of Feht, we had a long phone chat last night, about everything under the sun, including the worth of translation memory programs and whether technology will be used to enhance human liberty or to throttle it. At the end, it was he who was cheering me up, which is a mite unusual.
I've spent the last couple of hours cleaning up around the office. It sure would be nice to be able to find things without having to search, y'know?
Cheers...
