Bit by bit...
Aug. 17th, 2006 07:19 amI spent most of the day translating yesterday.
Somewhere around noon, I was diverted from my computer by a persistent knocking sound from outside that seemed to come from above. A look out the window revealed the visitor in the photo, who was energetically pounding away on the house. Not daring to try to open the screen that covered the window, I zoomed my digital camera to nearly full-scale and took a series of pictures, attempting to capture the bird's profile. If you look closely, say, at the blue sky portion of the image below, you can see I also captured the pattern of the screen.
According to my one-and-only (and not comprehensive) nature book on birds, this fellow is a Flicker, a woodpecker that is described as "loud-voiced" (and come to think of it, I do recall it made sounds other than knock-knock-knock, but I didn't pay attention to them).
I biked to the store around 3:30 pm, using my "backup" bicycle (one of the hams was going to throw it out and I took it; Drew swears we sold the same bicycle at a garage sale about a decade ago). I was curious to see if my lack of any substantial exercise during the recently completed campaign had affected my physical condition, and aside from not being able to cover the slight uphill portion along highway 160 with no gearing (I did shift a couple of gears on the rear derailleur), I made it without any appreciable trouble.
I tried to give Galina a couple of hours off, but we ended up giving Drew a couple of hours instead, and talked about finances.
I've got enough work to take me into the weekend, and I've sent off a short item that was due for this morning, but I also have to get cracking on clearing away stuff in the basement, accounting issues, and helping empty the store. The rest of the month is going to be interesting.
Cheers...
