Back online...
Nov. 28th, 2006 10:04 pmGrrr.
A few days ago, I routinely clicked "OK" when asked if I wanted to upgrade my Outpost firewall, but something went south during that process, which only became apparent earlier this evening, when I restarted my VAIO. Outpost threw a "can't load" error which, by the way, left my system in a state where I could go online, but I couldn't do anything.
Eventually, I settled on firing up my desktop and downloading the latest/greatest from Agnitum, the publisher of Outpost, which solved the basic problem of trying to delete the program from my system so I could install it from an old install file (I couldn't, nor could I install over the version on my disk), but then I got caught up in a viscious cycle where the installer kept deleting the application, requiring a reboot, so that I could install the app, requiring a reboot, whereupon the installer would pop up again to delete the application, requiring a reboot, so that I could install the app, requiring a reboot, whereupon...
You get the idea.
I went to the control panel and found there were two entries for Outpost in my list of installed applications. I deleted what seemed to be the older of the two, but that didn't do anything to mend things, except it did erase my configuration files. After doing the "shampoo-lather-repeat" routine once more, the VAIO booted up with the installer asking me to select an install language again, whereupon I went back to the Control Panel and deleted all traces of Outpost from my system, and then went through the rigamarole of installing the software One More Time™.
The farblegargling installer still popped up after this last time, but I killed it and then went looking for the animal that spawned it. I think I've taken care of the situation, but if not, I'll hit up Agnitum support sometime while they're moving about.
This was all the more frustrating, as I needed to go online to get some work done tonight, and now, as I'm coming off a major frustration curve, I'm just too stressed out to care one way or the other.
* * * Today's gig in Building 4S went well, with quite a bit of interpretation support being required. Tomorrow, I'm scheduled to support the Russian sim team for a simulation that will probably turn some hairs gray on the heads of most of the flight controllers.
* * * A great line from My Man Godfrey: "All you need for an asylum is a room and the right kind of people."
Hmmm.
* * * In cruise news, it turns out that anyone who wants to call us aboard the ship can do so, but it'll cost - get this - $9.50 per minute to do so. Also, while the food aboard ship is apparently included in the price of the cruise, apparently, if you want to drink anything other than water, you'll pay for it (and pay a 15% gratuity, too). I don't know if iced tea might be on the house, or coffee, but soda is in the same class as booze, bottles of which cannot be brought on board, except for a bottle or two of wine or champagne, for which one will pay a $15 "corkage" fee to open.
I feel we're going to be in nickel-and-dime territory for the duration (though not necessarily using those denominations). I can't wait to find out how much they're planning to charge for Internet access. I'm betting it'll be about $20 a day.
Cheers...
