It's been a strange day, which started with a periodic flareup in the hall outside our cabin early in the morning, fueled by alcohol, no doubt, involving a lot of shouting and name-calling. Neither Galina nor I got much quality sleep last night. Galina hadn't felt too good last night anyway, though she did manage to choke down some of the Asti that our travel agent comped us with, as well as a few bites of baked potato that I managed to bring back from the dining room.

By the time we rose at around 6:45 am, the ship had docked back in Galveston. We finished packing our bags and set off to find some breakfast while the cruise director sequentially announced disembarkation for people who hadn't left luggage out to be collected and brought ashore. (Convenience comes with a price; those who wanted their stuff lugged ashore had to wait until after 9 am to leave the ship.) We had our last breakfast of the cruise, called Natalie to check her status (freshly awakened and far enough away to have to wait for her even if she left immediately), and decided to get home under our own power.

The whole disembarkation process went remarkably smoothly, with the only delay being waiting in line for a customs official. We breezed through with, as it turned out, about 20 minutes to wait for the Enterprise car rental counter to open up. Renting a car was a bit pricey, but it beat paying $35 each for a shuttle to Hobby airport (from where we'd have to take a taxi), or $85 for a taxi to Hobby (whereupon, presumably, we could cut the trip short and be dropped off at home). It was good to be home again.

Galina got about 5 hours of sleep in the afternoon, after we visited our recently rented Seabrook house (hooray!) and made a stop at Sam's Club for some basic food products. After getting home, I lost consciousness for about 2 hours.

Somewhere around 4 pm, I started on the last part of the translation due tomorrow morning. I finished it around 6 pm or so and then spent time checking a number of name transliterations (realizing I knew the names, e.g., Hieronymous Bosch, but not exactly how some of them are spelled, and scratching my head over items such as "Олдос Хакали," which may mean I've been pronouncing Aldous Huxley's name wrong all these years). I'll give the job a last once-over tomorrow morning (just before we return the car) and then start on a sizeable new job with a new client.

It's getting late. Time to get some more shuteye.

Cheers...
