Still slow...
Jan. 10th, 2007 02:05 pmI got to the point last night where I could ping an IP address from a machine linked via wireless to my D-Link router, which was connected to a VAIO, which had established a connection to the Internet via my BlackBerry, but I could not ping the same address using its domain name. This would indicate a DNS problem of some kind, but also progress.
I got up this morning and took care of a quick translation for delivery today, and get a response with regard to a miserable medical transcription job (deciphering the handwriting of multiple doctors, who in Russia must apparently conform to the legendary requirement that doctors' penmanship be illegible), to the effect that very little of the text is recognizable.
Afterward, I've continued to clean the office, did some redesign work on my work-related web site, and had a light lunch. Galina is off at the newly rented property, where the new residents had uncovered what might turn out to be a serious plumbing problem in the master bath. (All I can see is dollar bills floating out the door.)
As mentioned before, my desktop computer has a tendency to not function for very long after being started, and when I took a close look at the motherboard today, it would appear that some of the capacitors near the CPU on the motherboard are corroded!
Well, at least now I don't have to worry about buying a new CPU, as it would appear that I probably need a new motherboard as well! (The thermal paste for which, BTW, appears to have flowed out from between the CPU and the heat sink.) One thing is for sure, however, the next desktop I get will have silent CPU cooling! (Actually, it may just be easier and cheaper to buy a cheap new machine, before the user-unfriendly Vista becomes the order of the day.)
Daylight is burning! Too many other things to take care of.
