Every once in a while, my fingers get uncoordinated and I end up striking some arcane key combination that - as it turns out - means something to a process lurking in the digital murk of my computer's memory.

About half an hour ago, I pressed some combination of keys and the letter "i", whereupon a dialog box popped up in the middle of my screen, titled "Windows - Wrong Volume." The message in the box was:
The wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert volume into drive D:
Below this message were three buttons: Cancel, Try Again, and Continue.

I hit Cancel, whereupon my machine made one of those annoying Windows noises and the dialog box reappeared.

I clicked on Continue, and I got the same noise and the same box.

I moused on Try Again, with the same result.

I tried to use the "X" button in the upper right-hand corner, with no luck.

I called up the Windows Task Manager and repeatedly clicked on Cancel to see if, perhaps, the number in the CPU load column might betray the insistent process, with no joy.

I suppose I could have just moved the window to my second screen and continued to work, but I had started to kill processes one by one, in an effort to find the culprit, so my configuration had been spoiled, so after getting to a certain point (and with Explorer killed), I had really no choice but to reboot via a hot powerdown.

I waited the requisite 30 seconds or so, pressed the power button to start the machine up, and went to get a drink of water. By the time I got back, the VAIO splash screen was still being displayed. It stayed that way for several more minutes, and the cold, gray tentacles of concern began to curl around my synapses: was whatever it was preventing the unit from booting, because it was still expecting me to do something with the D drive?

I cycled power again and removed the memory stick that is my default D drive. This post is evidence that the VAIO did boot up. But I wonder: what magical chord of keys did I press to deserve this?

Cheers...

UPDATE: A few minutes ago, it occurred to me to search on Google to see if the error message has been posted by others. It has.

This seems to be an old, known issue, but there's not much detail about it on the Web, and a lot of it seems out of date (Microsoft's support site refers to Windows 95, fercryinoutloud). Basically, I gather from bits and pieces that the problem has to do with there being no CD in the drive. Yawsa!

Marvy. Except on my system, the CD drive is E, not D.

Ah, well. I guess I'll write it off as a one-time deal.

With 7200 source words left in this file, I've run out of formatted text.

I will be happy if I can get my words-to-go down to 6,000 by the time I go to sleep tonight.

UPDATE (10:40 pm): After two days of falling short of my numbers, I am happy to say that I have 5700 words left in the OCRed part of the project, which places me a hair shy of 5,000 source words translated for the day.

That's almost half of what I need to do!

Of course, I'm not out of the woods yet. Those 5700 words are scattered over the next 29 pages of the document, after which I need to keep my head about me and process the remaining 17 pages by hand. Still, I feel a sight better now than I did this morning.

Cheers...
