Lots of wind, lots of rain...
Mar. 8th, 2008 09:26 pmSomething hit the house a few minutes ago, but I'm not about to go outside to check it out. An eyeball survey from inside the attic indicates no penetration, so I'm going to wait until it's daylight (and daylight savings time!) to see what I can see.
Today was another work day, naturally, though I was aided by a chunk of text that needed little attention. I ought to be able to finish the job tomorrow with little problem.
There was some kind of memorial service next door today for our late neighbor. A huge number of cars arrived and people were streaming up and down the driveway during most of the early afternoon. Seeing the cars there... triggered a memory.
Back when my folks moved into this house, the place next door was owned by a family where the breadwinner was a vice-president at J.C. Penney. They were pretty much the Cleavers, except that Ward Cleaver's character didn't quite drink so much, and the television family didn't own a pair of slobbering St. Bernards (is that a redundant statement?).
Our neighbors loved to entertain, and a couple of times a year, their driveway would be groaning with cars the way it groaned today. Once, however, my dad looked out the window of the den to check on the raucous laughter coming from over their way, only to see that there were cars parked on our property (guests had sort of driven up the driveway and then off onto our lawn).
The old man never said anything, nor (to my knowledge) did our neighbor, but my dad put a fence up along the property line in short order.
We went down to an Asian store in Hempstead today. I went specifically looking for some udon noodles, which they had, and some netto (fermented soybeans, which they didn't have). A few minutes ago, when I went to the bedroom as part of my what-hit-the-house walkaround, Galina was asleep.
Cheers...
