Crossing the finish line...
Oct. 24th, 2008 11:50 amIt's always a good feeling to complete an assignment, but today's end reminded me of one particular morning run during Marine basic training. During that three-mile run, instead of stopping at the end of three miles, our lieutenant kept on going, giving the impression that the long train of 200-some odd individuals arranged in four columns behind him was going to run around the 1-1/2 mile loop one more time.
An incredible number of my fellow recruits dropped out of the run at that point.
In the aftermath, we learned a valuable lesson: just because it's over doesn't mean it's over. The sentiment is not as pithy as Yogi's Law ("It ain't over 'til it's over!"), but has a place nonetheless, and I refer to it as Hambleton's Implied Corollary to Yogi's Law.
What happened today was that after everyone pretty much got ready to clear out of the meeting hall, I was asked to join the management layer in a smaller conference room for a session during which both sides were asked to express their opinion of the just-concluded meeting and any other remarks they might have. We ultimately left the place in time to get back to the hotel at 6:30 pm.
I picked up one of those two-prong cork pullers at the World Market that's a few hundred yards from the hotel, and threw out the packaging before attempting to actually pull a cork with the thing. Instead of withdrawing the cork, I succeeded in pushing it into the bottle, which is an Undesirable Outcome™. Perhaps later I'll see if there is any information on the 'net on how this item is to be used; I'm sure it is certainly there.
