So far, April is not shaping up too well, work-wise, but I will resist the temptation of going into full panic mode for a while and enjoy the respite.

Galina and I cleared part of the garage and moved the desk and hutch she will be using into my office. I've also gone through about a dozen of the boxes that've been wintering under the verandah (though I still have not found what I'm looking for). Among the stuff we did find was a small haul of stuff for the kitchen, including a barely-used rotisserie and a food processor.

I managed to wake up in time for the ham breakfast this morning. Traditionally, the appointed hour for the start of breakfast is 7 am, but also it's also traditional for folks to show up early, which I did, at 6:30 am.

I have pretty much always been the youngster in this group, as a sizable faction of this informal convocation is in the octogenarian class, or closely pushing it. Aside from a natural tendency to want to sleep in, one of the reasons I had not shown up at one of these breakfasts was not wanting to risk finding out that any of the regulars had become what hams call a "silent key." I am happy to report that this morning's breakfast was like old home week, with all the same faces (plus a couple of new ones), all alive and kicking.

I have also decided to start a very small garden - perhaps no bigger than a couple of square yards - and to increase its size over the next few years. My immediate problem is going to be how to keep whatever grows there out of reach of deer, elk, porcuipines, skunk, various flying creatures, and whatever else might have or develop a hankering for veggies.

What gives me encouragement is the fact that the ground in my prospective garden is clay, which is a welcome change from the shale that's ubiquitous elsewhere on the property. I'm pretty sure i can work the clay to include organic matter and soil, maybe even some compost.

Time to go wind down.

Cheers...
