Out and about...

While returning to Parker from Colorado Springs today, Galina noticed a pair of small aircraft in the air off to the left of the highway. These turned out to be a light aircraft towing a glider near the Air Force Academy. Both aircraft were painted bright yellow and floated through the sky in that languid way that only such craft can pull off while making it look easy.
That reminded me of having seen, through a screen of trees, a very large airplane on display near the north entrance to the Academy while speeding by on I-25. For some reason, that one time I saw the plane I imagined I saw a red insignia (star?) on the tail. (A major whisky-tango-foxtrot type moment, y'dig?)
So on the way back to Parker today, we got off the interstate at the north Academy entrance, negotiated our way past the guard shack, and parked near the display, which turned out to be a venerable B-52D (with the aircraft's identifying number painted in red on the tail's vertical stabilizer).
I found this middling-ancient piece of iron to be pretty impressive, providing an interesting contrast to the gliders floating through the sky above, visible between the engine nacelles as I stood between the wings.
Cheers...
