Cold and rainy Saturday...
May. 2nd, 2009 11:42 pmUpon arising this morning, it took no special skills to figure out that golf was not in the offing today. So, I wandered down to Nello's and played an offhand game of chess.
My inability to successfully reconstruct the game from memory past a certain point supports the idea that I really wasn't concentrating on what I was doing when, playing Black, after 1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Nd5 3.d4 d6 4.Nf3 dxe5 5.Nxe5 Nd7!? 6.Bf4??, I played 6...g3??, missing the en prise bishop, which White proceeded to also miss by continuing 7.c3??, after which I captured the bishop. It got to be a pretty wild game after that, and despite my subsequent best efforts to lose the game - eventually arriving at my rook and three minor pieces versus my opponent's rook and queen - I managed to luck out by setting an obvious (but successful) trap.
Later in the afternoon, after the rain had let up, Galina and I went over to the kids' place for the surprise birthday party Shannon had arranged for Drew. The effect was telegraphed somewhat by the fact that the normally empty street in front of the kids' house was lined with cars for about 75 yards on either side of the driveway, so there was no way to approach the house and not know something was up, but I think Drew was pleasantly surprised nonetheless.
I unearthed our el-cheapo DVD player from a box the other day and finally hooked it up tonight so Galina and I could watch the latest Bond film, Quantum of Solace, which I rented from the dollar-a-night kiosk at the City Market. While quite emphatic in terms of action, the flick was a bit too cynical in its philosophy for my taste.
Still, it's nice to know the player works, and as soon as I find the magic sequence of remote-control keystrokes that enable region-free mode, I'll be able to watch the backlog of non-region-1 DVDs that I'd like to see on a screen a bit larger than my laptop.
