I managed to translate 4300 source words today, and I can tell that if I try to do any more today, I'll probably nail another 500 words or so over the next several hours. I think I'll be better off getting some high-quality rest - away from my computer - and then hitting the bricks hard again tomorrow.

One of my purchases during my recent trip was something that looked like a piece of an antenna from a ground station. It consists of an aluminum plate with a raised hexagonal grid on one side, with holes drilled through the center of each hexagon, which measures about 2.5 cm from side to side.

This marvelous device is used to make pelmeni and yesterday, Galina and I gave it a whirl (under Galina's rather suspicious gaze... she's a "the only real pelmeni are made one at a time by hand" kind of gal). To keep things simple, we used some prepackaged spring roll dough that we had bought some time ago instead of mixing dough from scratch.

The process consisted of placing a layer of dough on the device, on top of the raised hex pattern, then filling the depressions with a mixture of ground beef, ground pork, finely chopped onion, and some garlic. After that step, we placed another layer of dough over the first and then used a roller to force both layers against the hex pattern.

Doing so all but cut the individual pelmeni apart, and "welded" the dough layers together in the area between the raised hex boundary and the hole, whose purpose is to give the meaty part of the dumpling a place to go while the roller does its thing.

I was able to make three "sets" of pelemeni rather quickly, and Galina and I had a nice lunch. The experiment was declared a success.

Now, all I have to do is learn how to make proper dough.

But not immediately-right-now. :^)

Cheers...
