Nov. 30th, 2009

alexpgp: (Corfu!)
I managed to despeckle and send the items due this morning, then invoiced all my outstanding work, noting with some satisfaction that November would make up for some invoicing shortfalls earlier in the year (or, depending on how you look at it, a windfall by the end of December).

I then put some time in on the long-term, no-deadline project for Feht before getting deflected by household chores and a grocery shopping trip, during which I noticed that the DVD vending machine at the City Market is now a Redbox (so I suppose I should start paying attention to the emails I keep getting with codes for free rentals).

On a whim, I stopped to see if Star Trek was available for rental, and it was. Galina and I watched it a little while ago and we enjoyed it. (That wasn't the case yesterday with Timur Bekmambetov's Wanted, which Galina liked but I could not watch.)

One of several minor nit I have to pick with the movie has to do with Ensign Chekhov's apparent inability to clearly pronounce the "V" sound in "Victor," slurring it instead as a "wuh" sound ("Weektor"), which causes the ship's computer to fail Chekhov's attempt at authentication. The only problem is, the "v" sound is a fundamental sound in Russian (represented by the third letter of the alphabet), so having Chekhov produce a "V" sound should've been a no-brainer. (I mean, it's not as if we're asking a native Japanese speaker to produce a sound that doesn't exist in Japanese, as is the case with the "L" sound in English, which may cause "Philadelphia" to come out as "Phiraderphia.")

There was a coupon in the NETGEAR box that entitles me to 50 free songs and an audiobook from emusic.com. If the light in my officer were brighter, I could read the fine, light-gray print on the back of the coupon, which I suspect involves a trial subscription. On the other hand, the music is DRM-free. Decisions, decisions.

Cheers...
