I just tried replying to a message received in my LJ inbox, and was surprised to learn that my reply cannot be sent because of some privacy settings.

So I will take this opportunity to cut my reply to its bare essence and publicly say, to my correspondent:

"Thank you for thinking of me. ;^)"

Cheers...

We agreed to go over to the kids' house for dinner at around 5 pm, but starting in the late morning, the weather looked as if it might get in the way. Somewhere around 3 pm, it actually began to rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning.

In the end, it cleared up in time for us to go to the kids' place, where we had a pleasant dinner and then leafed through a notebook of genealogical notes I had left with the kids some time ago. I'm gratified that Huntür took more than a passing interest in the information in the notebook, especially since some of the research I did back in the late 1970s at the New York Public Library brought me back to the 17th century.

I've been reviewing a bilingual French/English word list to improve my vocabulary recognition, but sure wish the compilers had done a little more work clarifying ambiguities. The English word "blind," for example, corresponds to the French word "store" in the list, which makes sense only once you understand that what is referred to is a device used to block light going through a window, and not an adjective describing an inability to see. (A happy side effect is finding yet another French/Russian cognate, as the corresponding Russian word is штора.)

Ah, well—live and learn.

Cheers...
