At the breakfast yesterday, I agreed to go out and visit Mack and Marie this morning and see if I couldn't get them up and running with a router that would allow them to have two machines connected to their DSL line. Everything went well. I learned more than I need to about Kyocera routers, and Maria's two machines—which she uses mostly in conjunction with her amateur radio activities (near the end of her eighth decade, she won a CW contest last year)—are online. I refused payment, but they really wanted to do a turn for me, so we all had lunch at the Shanghai.

I've been cleaning in the basement since I got back, after briefly checking out an assignment that arrived via email. The deadline for the work is COB Monday, so I have some leeway and don't have to jump on the job right away. (I had mentally declared today to be a work-free day, which means I didn't want to have to turn on my work computer.) As is the case with my books, I have to get into the right mood that will allow me to throw useless things out and not think "Well, you know, this might come in handy some day!"

On the way home from the Shanghai, I stopped by the health food store and in addition to the supplement I was looking for, I picked up a jar of "Bubbie's" pickles, which are picked using salt and spices instead of vinegar. I opened the jar a few minutes ago to sample the content and was reminded very suddenly of episodes in my childhood, helping my grandmother with her shopping.

I do not recall what store we were in, exactly, but toward the back, near the meat counter, there was a barrel that was filled with pickles and brine. It was a self-service kind of deal, and every so often, during one of our trips, my grandmother would use the utensil that hung nearby to fish out one or two of them that we would enjoy later during dinner. My job was to hold the barrel cover open while she did this, so I always got a nose full of that wonderful pickle aroma. I would be surprised to learn if pickles are still sold like this anywhere in the US.

The television fast proceeds apace (though I did cheat a bit and download last week's Castle). I hadn't realized just how used to watching TV I had become, despite my self-image as someone who watches the Tube only every once in a while.

The kitchen needs attention, and I am the only one around to do so. I better get to it.

Cheers...
