I unearthed a cache of old "reporter's notebooks" that I used to use for on-the-go notetaking. One of them dates from when we lived in Scotts Valley, California, and contains planning notes for various industry events and conferences, including one called "C++ at Work" that took place in Secaucus, New Jersey, in 1991. While that industry event was not particularly memorable, I do recall obtaining—in a Manhattan restaurant one evening during the conference—an autograph from one O.J. Simpson, some years after the zenith of his fame as a star athlete and some years before his going on trial for the murder of his wife.

Turning the pages of the notebook, it turns out I only managed to fill half the book before my departure from Borland, but I apparently picked up the notebook again in the late 90s, to jot down notes taken while interpreting a pilot "distance learning" program of instruction on Soyuz systems and procedures, televised from the cosmonaut training center at Star City, north of Moscow, for Houston-based astronauts slated to fly aboard Soyuz spacecraft.

Unfortunately, neither my Borland notes nor the Soyuz interpreting notes make much sense to me now, so they've been consigned to the trash.

One thing I've observed over the past few weeks about the difference between living at 7,800 feet in Colorado and at very nearly sea level here in New York is how much more sensitive I am to even small amounts of table salt in food.

I first noticed this after cooking pasta, which was too salty for my taste after preparing it here the way I customarily do in Pagosa. I'm down to adding almost literally pinches of salt to boiling water; anything more and I can taste it (or imagine that I can).

This morning, while working with webster (the VAIO that was superseded by the hapless HP that preceded my current netbook), XP kept throwing "Canvas does not allow drawing" errors at me during a file download, which aborted the operation. A Google session suggested that this might be the result of my machine having run out of resource space, which I interpreted to mean I had too many processes running. I selected a half dozen processes I felt I could do without and killed them, after which the download proceeded without incident.

Done is better than perfect, so I pressed on. BTW, I still use webster here and there, but not for work.

More rowing on the machine today, three sessions, 5 minutes each session. I am not trying to wind myself or achieve some kind of aerobic state; I just want to move around a bit without having to walk around outside. After all, despite the lack of snow, it's cold out.

My next step will be to gradually extend the time spent "rowing."

Cheers...
