Save for the changes decreed by Pope Gregory back in 1582, today would be Christmas, December 25, and in fact it is Christmas among Orthodox Christians, whose religious calendar hews to the Julian system. So while Russia "converted" to the Gregorian system in 1918, the Russian Orthodox Church did not, which is why Galina and I called Galina's sister and mother today to wish them a Merry Christmas.

The weather continues to be unseasonably mild, certainly compared to Colorado. After lunch, Galina and I went for a drive and ended up on Old Country Road, not far from the Costco "warehouse" store in Garden City. The last time we were in Costco, the place was jammed with people of our approximate age (and older).

As I looked around, it seemed to me they all such folk looked a little withered and a bit misshapen, with a set of bad teeth here, a prominent forehead there, and a manner of moving and handling things that sort of reminded me of Gollum in The Lord of the Rings.

And of course, once I realized this, the next thought through my mind was: "Do Galina and I look out of place among them?"

Speaking of appearances, my heart skipped a beat or two on the drive home, because as we sat stopped at a red light, I saw my late stepfather's face looking in my direction from the bus stop on the other side of the intersection. As we passed through the intersection and came closer to the bus stop, it became clear to me that the face belonged to a woman of indeterminate age, who was sitting on the bench at the stop, waiting for the next bus. As we approached and passed by, I could not take my eyes from her, because her facial features—from her hairline to her chin and from ear to ear—very much resembled those of my stepdad as I remember them. I am relieved that the woman did not, for whatever reason, follow our car with her gaze as we passed by, else that would've truly freaked me out.

I spent yesterday updating my curriculum vitae, and am wondering just what kinds of items I might include if I wanted to create a "portfolio" of written items. On the one hand, virtually all of the documents I translate are specific enough to my clients to preclude me from even considering their inclusion. On the other hand, I really don't have much else left over, at least not of recent origin. I suppose I could include photocopies of articles I wrote back in the 1990s, couldn't I?

I've managed to keep my work computer off all day. Go me!

Cheers...
