One of the other participants in the Friday morning ham breakfasts here in Pagosa became one additional data point regarding the use of voice-recognition software. He was an "early adopter" of the technology and says he uses it all the time. This data, combined with reports from too many translator acquaintances regarding the use of such software, has impelled me to fire up my Dragon Naturally Speaking software yet one more time to see what I could... say.

During two trials, performed yesterday and today, I managed to get into a certain rhythm, but the results often took so long to appear on my screen, that I could swear I could type the equivalent text faster. During one 30 minute period today, I managed to dictate about 260 words, which is not all that shabby, but during other 30 minute intervals of typing translations and instead of dictating them, my performance was about 25% to 30% better.

I should probably continue this experiment to see if my dictation speed improves (it should, as I've only been using the software for a brief time). That said, I have completed all but about 300 words of the standard I've been working on, and while there is a part of me that wants to press on and get through the first draft of this animal, there is another part of me that frankly, could not care less about achieving such a milestone.

Were I to finish the translation tonight, there would still remain quite a bit of work to do during the despeckling phase.

Another week starts tomorrow, and big deliveries are coming up on Wednesday and Thursday. I think I also have to figure out how to better deal with assignments that have long delivery times, especially when they begin to appear in parallel, as they have.

Cheers...
