Long day, lots of pedaling...
Aug. 16th, 2012 08:28 pm...but no bicycle.
I did get a bunch of things accomplished.
Besides The Routine Stuff™, I fixed a problem with my work web site, updated a few files there, and engaged in an email conversation with a client. I also asked a simple question about wikis that renewed my faith in the ability of some translators to express strong opinions. :^)
I also found out why I could not create a virtual Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop machine in either VMWare Player or Virtual Box. It was actually pretty simple: although the saved file looked okay (in that it had the .iso extension and an appropriate icon), it was about 350 MB too small. So, I redownloaded the CD image file and although Virtual Box appears to have had some kind of problem with installation (an error message followed by a corrupted screen), VMWare Player is moving along smoothly as I type this entry.
In other news, I called my Internet provider and cut my service from 3-up/10-down to 2-up/5-down (in Mbps) just to see if I could tell the difference from this end. Yesterday, while I was downloading what ended up being the incomplete Ubuntu .iso file, I was following the "action" via my web browser (which was connected to the compact server in my router's firmware), and I don't think I saw my download rate rise much above 1 Mbps for any length of time. It's been several hours since our conversation (so I assume the adjustment to my account has been made), and I've managed to download the full .iso since, so the verdict so far is that I may well have been wasting money for throughput that never materialized.
Another week almost done gone. Whoo-ee!
Cheers...
