Doings around these parts...
Jan. 28th, 2014 10:46 pmSo last night, the local channels start going nuts about the prospect of not only a night of freezing rain, along the lines of what happened a little while ago, but of temperatures not going above freezing today, implying that roads would remain impassible due to ice until some time tomorrow. There was no dilly-dallying, as was the case last time. Schools, it was announced last night, would be closed today.
So naturally, the weather refused to cooperate.
I had one of those rare sleepless nights, waking at about 3:15 am, at which point I checked the temperature "next door" in Pasadena. It was 46°F, and remained pretty much that way through the rest of the night. Most of the freezing rain zipped by to the north of Houston. When freezing rain finally did fall in our neck of the woods, it was in the afternoon, and although there was enough of it to coat the lawn furniture with ice, it wasn't enough to overcome the thermal "mass" of our driveway and the roads, which remained ice-free, at least until I returned home from tai chi.
Today's tai chi session was hugely instructive for me, not only because I was introduced to another push-hands drill, but because sifu went "over" the appointed time for the class to explain some extremely fine points related to "sticking" to one's opponent, having to do with the redirection of force, and the position of one's elbows when striking. While most of this was clear enough to me while he was explaining it, I now find myself—a mere couple of hours later—recalling only the major points, and then only with considerable fuzziness (except for the lessons from the hands-on session involving my elbows). For sure, tai chi continues to be a challenge I enjoy.
In other news, I managed to get a huge amount of work done today, but was chagrined to learn that I had neglected to put a relatively small job into my work flow—I think it's the first time that's happened since I've instituted the flow—so of course I completely fromitzed the deadline. The comforting news is that all is not lost and I can submit the work tomorrow with no harm done, but the next time I have a few spare minutes in which to think about tightening the quality of my work flow, the lessons learned from this incident is going to have to take center stage.
My "sleep balance" is somewhat out of whack; I better set about correcting that pronto.
Cheers...
